Guide

Should my business use a .com or .com.bd domain?

For most businesses in Bangladesh either ending works. A .com is not tied to any country and suits a business that may serve customers abroad. A .com.bd tells Google and visitors the site is for Bangladesh, which suits a business that only serves customers here. The name itself, and owning it in your name, matter more than the ending.

What the difference is

.com is a generic ending. Google describes generic endings as domains that are not associated with any specific location.

.com.bd sits under .bd, Bangladesh's country code. The .bd registry is run by Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL), and .com.bd is the ending meant for commercial use. You can register it through BTCL or through a domain provider that sells .bd names.

How Google treats each one

Google treats a country-code ending such as .com.bd as a strong signal that a site is meant for that country. That can help when someone in Bangladesh searches for what you offer, but it also means the site is seen as being for Bangladesh only.

A .com site can still be found by people in Bangladesh. Google also looks at the language of your pages, local addresses and phone numbers, links from local sites and your Google Business Profile. Neither ending guarantees a position in search.

When each one makes sense

Choose .com.bd if you only serve customers in Bangladesh and want the address itself to say so, or if the .com version of your name is already taken.

Choose .com if you may sell or work abroad later, or if you want the shortest, most familiar address to say out loud and print on a card. Some businesses register both and send one to the other, so customers reach the site whichever they type.

What matters more than the ending

A short name that is easy to spell after hearing it once. If you have to spell it out on every call, it is too long.

Ownership. Register the domain in your own name, with an email address you control, and set a reminder before it renews. A domain that lapses can be bought by someone else.

Consistency. Use the same name on your website, Facebook page and Google Business Profile, so customers and search engines can tell they belong to the same business.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I register just .bd, without the com?

BTCL's site lists .bd alongside .com.bd and the other endings. Rules and availability for .bd names have changed over the years, so check the current terms with the registry before you plan around it.

Can I change my domain later?

Yes, but every card, link and listing has to change. Google recommends permanent (301) redirects from the old address to the new one, kept for at least a year, so visitors and search signals follow you.

Who should own the domain, me or my web designer?

You. The registration should be in your name and paid with your money, with the login handed to you. When Norvik builds a site, the domain is registered in the client's name.
